A Study on the Chinese Translations of Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns from the Perspective of Pragmatic Differences
This study takes the two Chinese translations of Khaled Hosseini’s novel A Thousand Splendid Suns as its corpus, and based on Wang Jianguo’s (2014) pragmatic translation findings, systematically examines the pragmatic differences between English and Chinese through a comparative analysis. The findings reveal a significant tendency toward “process” in the translation process from English into Chinese—that is, translators generally adopt the N-1 strategy to accommodate Chinese pragmatic conventions. Specifically, at the lexical, syntactic, and aesthetic levels, abstract concepts or result-oriented expressions in English are frequently transformed into more concrete or process-oriented renderings in Chinese.
